Maria Pauline Jaklitsch, BA
or Pauline Jaklitsch
(artist names) Lilli Jaklitsch and Masha Jaklitsch
is an austrian artist and feminist from graz,
who is based in vienna also.
She does yoga since 2005.
Having studied physical theatre (2007 - 2009) at the école lecoq in paris and
estudis berty tovias in barcelona,
Masha/Pauline/Lilli changes her name legally from Ulrike Barbara to Maria Pauline in 2009.
2011 is the year for Masha Jaklitsch (Lilli Jaklitsch, Pauline Jaklitsch) to launch her own art project enveloping physical theatre, dance/choreography, music & text - PASTELARIA PRODUKTIONEN EUROPA. Set in Graz, Geidorf (Margaretenbadviertel) since 2013 with a rehearsal-, working- and performance space, several projects are realised. In 2015, Stefanie Reibenbacher, MA - a colleague in english & american studies at the karl franzens universität Graz joins the art project as organisational director while Masha continues as the artistic director. In 2018 the project is set on ice for the time being.
In 2019 Masha does a 3-months internship at the library department of the tanzquartier wien (TQW) and
she completes trainings at the impulstanzfestival vienna (Philip Gehmacher, Kristina and Sadé Alleyne, Mårten Spångberg, Anne Juren) in 2019 and 2020
to then study visual arts at the rietveld academie in amsterdam until 2022.
Masha Jaklitsch (Pauline Jaklitsch, Lilli Jaklitsch) has got a
university background in linguistics and languages
in graz (karl franzens universität graz, english & american studies and germanistik, 1. Studienabschnitt abgeschlossen (2002 - 2005), BA english & american studies (2016) - BA thesis focus in phonetics and phonology),
in vienna (vienna university, (2016 - 2017) BA transcultural tommunication - german : french : portuguese - step up exams completed) and
in amsterdam (universiteit van amsterdam, (2017 - 2021) MA language and society (french) - MA thesis is not completed)
Her focus is on multilingualism, discourse analysis, metaphor studies as well as synchronic and anachronic perspectives onto the indoeuropean languages (westgermanic and romance languages).
From February 2018 on Masha Jaklitsch does a 6-months internship at the metaphor lab amsterdam within the context of her studies at the university of amsterdam and sends in the research based on her work there end of january 2020.
1 month later the corona pandemic has got control of the world. Communication with university becomes difficult due to it.
Much of Masha's (Pauline's, Lilli's) writing is based on her very background in linguistics.
With UNDER THE SEA (2006 - today) she aims at using and developing non-violent, non-discrimatory, non-abusive poetic language.
In this sense Masha (Pauline or Lilli) has a good grip on several languages; speaking german (native language), english, french, spanish, dutch and having the capacity to read and understand italian and portuguese.
In 2022 Masha changes her focus from her studies at the rietveld academy to her own artist-led-space ( A T E L I E R M A S H A J A K L I T S C H )
in graz, geidorf (margaretenbadviertel).
Furthermore, Masha Jaklitsch experiments with synthesizer music since 2016 ongoing.
More so, Maria Pauline Jaklitsch, BA lives and works in vienna just as graz.
Artist statement Masha Jaklitsch (Lilli Jaklitsch, Pauline Jaklitsch):
"Democracy means that noone gets hurt for speaking up and making own decisions about life except for those people breaking the law who actively hurt and punish people for making up their own mind about how to live life and choosing the environment they want to be in.
To build something making sense within the bigger picture in your neighbourhood, city, region, country as well as in a greater context, such as Europe or the planet all together, is a constructive idea which should not be undermined as long as in line with the democratic principles.
Growing up in Austria, within a christian (roman-catholic) context and much awareness of science as an orientation for what is true and real, and having read into Buddhism and Yoga when being a young adult, I only support principles and worldviews with the following underlying assumptions: Whatever you do or plan to reach, regardless in which field(s), it should be approached in
- non-violent,
- non-abusive &
- non-discrimatory
ways.
One has to aim at doing this as well as possible or otherwise the basic principles of democracy that no human being/citizen is neither to be pursecuted nor put in jail nor killed nor excluded for using the freedom of opinion and the freedom of speech can not be upheld.
Therefore, the human rights and in consequence humanitarian aid and diplomacy are central to all my artistic projects and my artistic practice all together.
The architecture of democracy needs to be in line with our thinking and acting in life as well as the laws.

>>> DANCE & CHOREOGRAPHY:
Contemporary dance knows
- many approaches,
- different vocabularies and
- different aesthetics.
Some can be
- intellectual,
- philosophical,
- mathematical,
- geometrical,
- emotional,
- poetic,
- random or
- governed by music.
In Masha's choreographic practice
thinking in or with movement
plays a role as well as resolution.
"Sometimes you dance or you see dance and despite it being difficult to describe in words - for reasons of complexity -
you get to this feeling 'oh, now I understand, now I can continue!...
I like that.'
Sometimes there are no words; All is dance. All is choreography.
It is a language and thinking ('embodied cognition').
It is communication."
For Masha dance studies are an interesting field in this sense.

>>> PAINTING / DRAWINGS / INSTALLATION:
Interested in the body and abstract painting
with an exploration into combinations of colours and the dynamics that happen consequentially,
Masha thinks painting as a universe to be seen
from a multitude of viewpoints
and would like to think perspective from
yet to be described and imagined grounds
building and questioning existing theories thereof,
such as central perspective.
"In my drawing practice I mostly focus on the body and
distinguishing it from, and making seen,
the impact of its environment;
like in yoga where you also become more aware of where you physically begin and end
and what influences you can feel around you."
In her installations Masha focuses on
three points:
- room,
- society,
- choreography.
Her minimal or abstract works are
often complemented by a text or
a narrative
to illustrate the background.
For Masha
thinking about society is tied a lot to room;
how we use room, how we share it and how much room we all can claim for ourselves.
This also includes
- economic and political contexts and
- dynamics of inclusion,
- exclusion and
- marginalisation.
She is guided by the ideas of minimalism and responsibility.
On the other hand,
room as an abstract notion
is tied
to movement and time.
That is, the choreography of bodies and objects do play a role in Masha's artistic practice.
>>> POETRY / LANGUAGE:
Poetry and music are
similar in some ways, it is said.
Masha starts writing poetry, first in the English language,
when she was 19 studying English and American studies at the Karl Franzens Universität Graz.
In 2009
being fluent in
- English,
- French and
- Spanish besides her native language
- German,
Masha decides to aim at something
impossible to in her mind:
poetry in the German language,
a language that she thinks is
difficult to be poetic in
without it being
sentimental or kitschy.
"In 2018, 2019 and during the
pandemic-lockdown in summer 2020,
poetry was all there was!
(And dance).
Without it no way od emotionally surviving
these times
that was traumatic for a lot of people
in a lot of ways.
I would never say that I am a writer
I see myself as a poet.
UNDER THE SEA also is poetry not fiction."
Among the most important influences
in poetry
are
Bob Dylan,
Erich Fried and
Fernando Pessoa.
"I would definitely say that in the context of my English studies taking language apart with linguistics influenced my understanding of poetry
as well as William Shakespeare's plays!"
>>> MUSIC:
Is a mind set.
In a world of restrictions music will always be
a refuge,
a remedy;
a resolution;
Through minimal and noise and some techno influences, Masha one day understood that the synthesiser is the musical instrument for her to make music with.
"A friend showed me this yellow machine with a touchpad actually,
- a KORG kaossilator -
and started to play and as it was, I just knew: I need a machine/instrument like this."
Masha initially thought she could not learn a musical instrument
and it was because of her appreciation of Bob Dylan that she learned
how to play the harmonica;
"I studied English & American studies from 2002 - 2005
before becoming an artist
moving to Berlin that year...
and to Paris 2007
to Barcelona in 2008
back to Graz in 2009
to Vienna in 2014
back to Graz and then
from Vienna to Amsterdam in 2017.
Back and forth.
I would like to learn Russian since the country has got a thing with tech and there is synthesis around that is very nice.
I've got a synth that has been build by a small company and it doesn't say that it is from Russia
but that's the way I imagine it."
